Tailored Geospatial Support for the ILSC

The Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation (ILSC) is a Commonwealth Statutory entity that supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to realise their economic, social, cultural, and environmental benefits through the acquisition and management of their lands and waters. With offices across the country, the ILSC's long-term vision is for Indigenous people to enjoy their rightful entitlements, opportunities, and benefits that the return and management of Country brings.

The ILSC wanted more than your average geospatial provider; they were seeking a like-minded, values-aligned, and forward-thinking partner. That’s why they engaged Winyama. By partnering with Winyama, the ILSC gains high-quality mapping services from a team that is culturally attuned and deeply committed to Indigenous empowerment, self-determination, and cultural preservation.

Location and culture are central to the ILSC’s work—and Winyama understands both.
As a Supply Nation certified partner, Winyama brings cultural insight and a clear understanding of the ILSC’s purpose. Their team offers the breadth of geospatial expertise needed to support the ILSC to deliver on its legislated mandate, providing solutions that are both technically sound and culturally informed.

The Transition Period

A three-month transition period was established at the beginning of the partnership, during which a skilled Winyama GIS Analyst, began supporting the ILSC for a fixed number of days per week. This approach gave Winyama and the ILSC time to align work arrangements, expectations, and processes while maintaining business continuity.

As the partnership has matured, Winyama’s geospatial support has increased with flexibility to scale up or down in response to demand. Regular scheduled check-ins allow ILSC and Winyama to adjust the service mix to meet business needs.

Our Team Becomes Your Team

At Winyama, we strive to go beyond simply delivering services; our desire is to foster strong relationships with our clients and become an extension of their team. “ I have especially appreciated Winyama’s collaborative approach. Their staff understand the importance of gathering different perspectives on a given challenge. This lends itself to valuable input and fresh perspectives on ongoing issues,”  says Joel Dillon, who has worked closely with Winyama resources in the last year.

A key aspect of Winyama’s support is the ongoing maintenance of the ILSC’s foundational location datasets, which underpin all its geospatial projects. This responsibility demands precision and contextual understanding. As Joel notes, “Winyama invests the time to ensure the data is managed with care and accuracy, always considering its context.” By establishing robust, well-managed processes from the outset, Winyama is helping to future proof the ILSC’s geospatial capabilities and avoid costly future rework, saving the ILSC time and money in the long run.

Operating From a Place of Understanding

One of Winyama’s greatest strengths, Joel says, is the genuine commitment to partnership and understanding of client needs.

I’ve found Winyama to be exceptionally responsive. When I request something from Andrew, if anything’s unclear or needs unpacking, he’ll just give me a call and we’ll have a yarn. That kind of thoughtful, person-to-person engagement really stands out.
— Joel Dillon, Manager, Data and Geospatial, Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation

Ultimately, these sorts of engagements lead to more trust between organisations, reducing the need for revisions, saving both ILSC and Winyama precious time and unnecessary frustration.

Shared Partnership, Shared Success

After a year of successful collaboration, the ILSC’s decision to renew its contract with Winyama reflects a shared commitment to advancing Indigenous empowerment through mapping. The Winyama team is proud to remain their geospatial provider and looks forward to continuing work that supports strong Indigenous outcomes.

Support Mob Transitioning to Tech

Winyama runs several social impact initiatives that support our vision of full and equal participation of Indigenous people in the digital economy. One such initiative is our Digital Skills Internship. Our paid internship supports Boorloo (Perth)-based Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people entering the technology sector in a culturally supportive and innovative environment.

As part of their internship, our interns are placed on commercial contracts at a discounted rate under the guidance of our senior team, ensuring that commercial deliverables are met whilst fulfilling our vision of seeing more Indigenous representation in the tech sector.
