About this Position


The Cultural Projects Research Coordinator plays a central role in integrating Indigenous Knowledge with geospatial technology at Winyama.

This position leads the delivery of cultural mapping and community engagement projects, ensuring that work is carried out with respect for cultural protocols, free, prior and informed consent, and Indigenous data sovereignty. The Cultural Projects Coordinator is responsible for building trust-based relationships with Elders, Traditional Owner groups, Prescribed Bodies Corporate (PBCs), and other stakeholders, while embedding best-practice approaches to culturally safe engagement across the organisation.

This role requires frequent travel to regional and remote locations within Western Australia, estimated at 1-2 weeks per month. All travel costs will be covered by Winyama.

As an Indigenous-owned and operated business, preference will be given to applicants who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.

Location: Perth, WA (with regular regional and remote travel)

Salary Classification: Level 3

Employment Type: 1.FTE (Full Time)


Selection Criteria

  • Anthropology, Sociology, Indigenous Studies, or equivalent experience.

  • Expertise in ethnographic methods, oral histories, cultural documentation, and archival research.

  • Strong cross-cultural communication, deep listening, and relationship-building skills with Indigenous communities.

  • Understanding of cultural protocols and ability to transform research and mapping into practical community tools.

  • Personal qualities: patience, integrity, cultural humility, advocacy mindset, and self-awareness.

Desirable Criteria

  • Familiarity with geospatial platforms (Google Earth Pro, QGIS, ArcGIS Online).

  • Project management experience.

  • Knowledge of PBCs, Native Title processes, and cultural heritage frameworks.
